CMFCPropertyGridCtrl not being painted in "Release" mode

In a C++ MFC feature pack UI solution (using the Visual Studio style UI template), my CMFCPropertyGridCtrl "properties" style pane in the CDockablePane is not being painted in "Release" mode only i.e. everything works perfectly in "Debug" mode. I understand the general differences between a debug and release build but have not been able to identify the specific problem yet. For example, there appear to be no unexpected exceptions changing the callflow. Before breaking this down further I wanted to see if this was a known problem. The CMFCPropertyGridCtrl is mostly unchanged from the MFC feature pack generated template except for adding the usual CMFCPropertyGridProperty tree items to the parent CDockablePane "OnCreate" function as per the example. Has anybody had a similar problem where the CMFCPropertyGridCtrl is blank or does not refresh or paint? This problem occurs on either VS2010 or VS2008 and on both Windows 7 and Windows XP platforms so it looks like a problem with the application code, however, the code is very close to the generated template.
